RIFLESMITHING
Hooper’s believes in the three B’s of accuracy: Barrels, Bedding, and Bullets
BARRELS
Hooper precision follows Benchrest procedures when fitting barrels to actions. Our goal is to put a rifle in your hands that has the accuracy potential to shoot hole on hole at 100 yards, and hit a 6” gong at 600 yards. Each barrel is handmade, inspected, threaded and chambered to exacting QA standards. We prefer to work with 700 Remington actions and customs. We check and rework 700 actions against the blueprint with specialized tooling. We test fire every rifle and check the brass. We qualify all our custom rifles at 100 yards and supply test targets. Nothing leaves our shop until it meets our accuracy standards.
BEDDING
HPR recommends all actions be bedded in a stress free interface with the stock. Bolting an action where the stock interface (inlet) is not shaped exactly like the action, causes the action to bend. The result of bending and stress will move your point of impact around on the paper. Synthetic stocks, aluminum chassis, and wood/laminate stocks bedded with epoxy all have excellent accuracy potential. Keep in mind, wood and laminate wood can warp if exposed to moisture. Actions loose, that move, will not be accurate. Pillars help prevent your action from moving/loosening, from shot to shot. Free floating of the fore end is also critical to a stress free setup.
BULLETS
Ammunition is critical in accuracy. Brass is usually the pacing item for any highly accurate rifle. Bullet availability should be considered as well. The popularity of 6.5mm cartridges by long range and competitive shooters is due to the availability of Lapua brass and high quality 6.5mm bullets. Our favorite accuracy chamberings are 22-250, 6mm PPC, 6mm BR, 6mm Dasher, 243 win, 6.5x47 Lapua, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5x55 Swede, 6.5x284 Win,260 rem, 30 BR, 308 Hooper, 308 Win.30-06, 338 Lapua Mag.
ACCURACY GUARANTEE
We guarantee accuracy of our rifles and generate a test target for every rifle. We guarantee a ½” or less 3 shot group with our rifles at 100 yards with premium ammo. Typically, our rifles shoot hole in hole and consistently hit a 6” steel at 600 yards. We shoot every rifle that comes through the shop, and we can tell quickly if a rifle shoots well. We have a database for custom loads that shoot extremely tight groups. Our rifles come with dies and load data upon request.
